Chai and the Southern Highlands - The Story of Chai Supply

Every product has an origin story. Ours begins in 2017, with a lifestyle brand called Unbusy, a trip to India, and a husband who spent three quiet months perfecting a spice blend in the kitchen.

Where it started — Unbusy

Founder, Rachel Biffin had spent years as a Pilates professional. When she stepped back from that career, she wanted to create something that embodied everything she believed in — slowness, intention, the art of being genuinely unhurried in a world that rewards the opposite.

She called the brand Unbusy. And she wanted a product at its heart that felt like a physical embodiment of that philosophy. Something warm. Something made with care. Something that asked you to slow down and savour it.

Inspired by time in India and travels up the east coast of Australia — through Bellingen, Byron Bay, and the pockets of considered, slow living she found along the way, Rachel landed on chai. Not the powdered kind. The real kind.

Jake and the recipe

Rachel's husband Jake with decades of experience in manufacturing and the iterative work of getting something exactly right, spent over three months developing the recipe. Testing ratios of spice. Trying different teas. Adjusting the honey. Starting again.

What emerged was a blend that both of them knew immediately was right — full-bodied, warming, complex without being overwhelming. A chai flavour matching their the best chai sipping they had experienced. The kind that makes you stop whatever you're doing and just enjoy the moment of drinking it.

Into the Highlands — and beyond

Over the next two years, Rachel worked to get the Unbusy brand into the world. She sold the chai blends into cafes in the Southern Highlands. Onto the shelves of Harris Farm in Bowral. Into boutiques around the region.

Then Covid arrived. The blending schedule became impossible to maintain. Rachel made the difficult decision to sell the Unbusy brand — but she kept the chai recipe. She knew it was too good to let go.

The years between

For the next few years, the chai existed only as gifts. Friends who came over for dinner. Christmas presents for family and teachers at the kids' school. The reaction was always the same — genuine delight.

With several more years of marketing and branding experience, Rachel decided to rebrand the blends.

Chai Supply is born

In late 2024, after recovering from Long Covid, Rachel decided it was time. She created Chai Supply — initially as an MVP, a lean and honest version of the brand — and began selling to friends, family, and a small number of public customers who found their way to it.

The response confirmed what she already suspected. The blend was special. And there was a real appetite for an organic, considered, small-batch chai with a genuine provenance story.

The next chapter

A year of testing, listening, and refining later, Chai Supply relaunched with fully compostable packaging, refreshed branding, and a clear mission: to grow a calm, sustainable wholesale and retail business that puts a genuinely delightful cup of chai in front of as many people as possible.

We're based in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales — in Bowral, where the mornings are cool, the light is beautiful.

We blend in small batches. We ship across Australia. We write a weekly letter called the Sippers Club about chai, slow living, and what it looks like to build something small and real from scratch.

We're glad you found us.
